Lego 8547 mindstorms nxt 2.0 robotics kit review
Lego Mindstorm kits seem to be a great way to ease a child into those kinds of topics. I program for a living and its nice that you can create something with a 10, foot view of things instead of having to dig through details that derail a child's attention.
Its a good and simple kit with room to grow to a much more involved kit if you decide to take it that way. There are several free high end programming packages out there if you decide to take your programming to a higher level and there are a lot of after market kits on eBay and elsewhere that can also cheaply expand the abilities of the kit.
My daughter has alread y created a few robotics projects and I am easing her into the programming sides of things. Being a graphical programming language,it gives a good start into the ins and outs of programming. I would definitely purchase this kit again. I know that a new version is out. It is better than the Mindstorms NXT 2. I bought my NXT 2. The older NXT 1. I am getting some books for the NXT 2. Kids can learn math as degrees, rotations, conversions. Also allows kids to apply their math skills. They see a reason for all those hours spent on the drudgery of math problems they encounter at school. Kids encounter mechanical devices such as linkages, gears, etc..
This also involves quite a bit of spatial reasoning to tinker your creation. Also teaches that the computer is a tool not just entertainment. Teaches kids that failure is okay but satisfaction is achieved when they problem solve to improve their design. You can see the light bulb go on when they start to brainstorm. After a long day at school many kids come in with such enthusiasm. They don't realize they are learning. This is a gre at stepping stone for many to do more advanced programming and robot design.
I could go on and on. But beware Parents must involve themselves. This is not a toy that young kids can just play by themselves. I got my daughter so involved by bringing it to her friends in an after school program. I now have so many kids wanting to join the group. I can't think of a better learning tool for the 21st century then hooking a 10 year old into this 'system' of playing its really hard core learning with robots.
